SERMON: Judges 21:1-15, The Consequences of our Hands
…You’ve heard the saying, “taking matters into your own hands.” What comes to mind when you hear that saying? What events have transpired that make a person take a matter into his own hands? Everyone else has failed. Everyone tried to succeed, but all their efforts resulted in failure. So now, there’s only one option left. You. You are going to succeed where everyone else felt the dishonor of defeat.
The movies make you want to think that taking matters into your own hands leads to victory. It’s a cliché in “righteous vengeance” movies. The police failed to solve the mystery of his daughter’s murder, so the father “takes justice into his own hands.” And he finds justice. And all is well in the world.
Now, you may not be so influenced by Hollywood as to think that you would actually accomplish justice by taking vengeance into your own hands.
But, what matters do you take into your own hands?
Think on that question for a moment. For I assume you know that there is One to whom we ought to give all the matters of life. And at the risk of being made a fool, I also assume, that, like me, you still occasionally take certain matters into your own hand. So, I’ll ask again. What matters of life do you take into your own hands?…
