…Well, we are starting a new series on the book of Mark. And I’ve titled this series, EXTRA! EXTRA! The Kingdom of God invades Babylon! When you hear that series title, what does it sound like? A news headline. People write news headlines to grab your attention and compel you to read the story. And the story following the headline relates events that already happened. And the headline means that the story that follows is consequential, important, momentous, significant.
Mark’s gospel story begins with a headline.
Mark 1:1 The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God. This is no ordinary headline. What and who are we going to encounter as we read the book? The good news of Jesus Christ, the Son of God. What’s the most significant headline you have ever read? Maybe something related to the end of World War II, maybe something related 9-11, maybe something related to an election or civil matter? What Mark has presented to us is far more significant that any other headline you will ever read. World War II impacted millions of people at a certain point in history, but the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God, impacts all people, across the ages, into eternity.
